Thu, 22 Oct 2020 20:07:54 +0000 Agriculturist: Use more state lands for food security

Agricultural consultant Riyadh Mohammed is questioning the allocation and use of state lands and the actual use of arable land for its intended purpose. Speaking with Newsday, Mohammed, the lead consultant at Tropical Agriculture Consultancy Services, said the distribution of state lands has raised many questions and has always been problematic and controversial. The administrative body for state land is headed by the Commissioner of State Lands in the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, who is responsible for issuing licences, rights of way, leases and agreements, special permissions, eviction notices to squatters and advising on termination notices to tenants in breach of agreements. Mohammed had several questions, "How much of the agricultural state lands issued to tenants are being fully utilised, under full production capacity or abandoned, how is the evaluation of agricultural productivity measured and what are the repercussions of not being productive?” He said these concerns should be raised at a time when the world faces a pandemic and food security should be a priority, especially for a small island developing state. Mohammed pointed out that approximately 52 per cent of the entire acreage of TT was state land

SOME 49 employees of One Caribbean Media's subsidiaries CCN, Trinidad Express and TV6 have been served retrenchment letters this week. Group CEO Dawn Thomas made the announcement on Wednesday, saying the move was both part of a restructuring exercise undertaken by the company and a result of declining revenues in recent years. The workers' respective union representatives and the Ministry of Labour have also been notified. In her statement, Thomas wrote, "The media industry has been going through fundamental changes mainly due to technological developments in the digital space. "Additionally, the economic environment has been challenging and in decline for several years." She said these factors have negatively affected its advertising revenues as clients have cut their advertising and marketing budgets "as they too struggle with a decline in their business performance. She said before the retrenchments, the management team “explored all possible actions during its restructuring exercise including cost reduction measures in all areas." Newsday recently spoke with Banking, Insurance and General Workers Union president Mario Als, who held discussions with the conglomerate ahead of the move. The union mem

Catty Asaveria-Snaggs has always been fascinated by the mud volcanoes in her hometown of Rancho Quemado, Palo Seco. So, when she and her family found themselves in a financial bind in 2018, she was forced to fast-track a plan upon which she had been slowly building – one that involved the contents of the mud volcanoes she loved as a child. “Growing up in Rancho Quemado, Palo Seco was very nice, it was very inspiring as there were a wealth of resources that we have in the community that was overlooked daily. “One of my favourite places to visit was the mud volcanoes, located within walking distance of my home. I was always amazed at the never-ending flow of the rich grey mud. So, going there became like a sanctuary for me where I could develop my thoughts and creativity.” [caption id="attachment_853153" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Catty Asaveria-Snaggs wades in one of the ponds of the mud volcanoes in Rancho Quemado. -[/caption] She told Newsday she always had an entrepreneural spirit and knew she would establish and run her own body care products business some day. Thu, 22 Oct 2020 09:54:54 +0000 Responding to the cybersecurity threat

For years, conversations about cybersecurity in Trinidad and Tobago have surfaced. Seminars have been held. Consultants have spoken. Minor hacks have been reported. Two weeks ago, a major cybersecurity incident took place with an attack by a Russian ransomware organisation targeting the operations of Ansa McAl. The attack began in Barbados and spread to the company's operations in TT, leading to a shutdown of Tatil and Tatil Life. This is the first cybersecurity attack on a major company to go public. It would be naive to think it was the only one. Ransomware is hacking gone commercial. The object of the criminal enterprise is to make money, and these gangs do so by amplifying their reach through a network of affiliates who co-brand their malware tools and expand the attack surface on companies. It's cybercrime organised as multi-level marketing. The hacks that have gone public previously have been pranks. Websites defaced and tagged by hackers who went on to brag about their exploits. Ransomware is a different level of threat, one that costs companies millions, both in downtime and in payments to retrieve irreplaceable data. In a typical ransomware attack, company files are encrypted on its own servers so t

DR RITA PEMBERTON Visible to all who traverse the Claude Noel Highway (and care to look), is the 60-foot dancing male figure at the top of Signal Hill which stimulates neither interest nor attention from the Tobago public. The monument, which currently presents signs of disrepair, seems to have been abandoned by officialdom despite the odd voice crying from the political wilderness for maintenance work to be applied to the structure. Designed and fabricated by York Structures, the monument was intended to be the marker for the event to follow, the Millennium concert in Tobago. This was planned to be an extraordinary event, to entertain patrons with a send-off to the decade of the 1990s and the 20th century with a "bang," and "ring" in the new millennium with the hopes and dreams it embodied. Billed as a grand international event with participation from regional artistes, from its very incipient planning stages, the concert attracted heavy media attention and public scrutiny and opposition. Contrary to the promises of the organisers, the Ring Bang Celebra
