Tue, 17 Nov 2020 05:43:55 +0000 UTC records $19m q3 profit

The Unit Trust Corporation maintained its post-pandemic rebound, posting a $19 million profit for the third quarter 2020 – four per cent higher than the same period last year. Total comprehensive income (less other comprehensive losses) was 18.3 million, or 1.7 per cent lower than last year. Net income for the first nine months of 2020 was $47 million or 42 per cent lower year-on-year, but still positive considering the corporation’s $45 million loss in the first quarter – although not as good as the $73 million second quarter profit. “We have maintained our very proactive and vigilant stance in the face of the volatile market conditions created by the covid19 pandemic,” UTC chairman Gerry Brooks said in his report accompanying the financials. He attributed lower profits directly to an increased price guarantee provision as compared to the prior year (a type of consumer protection against fluctuating markets); lower local and international interest rates; lower dividend pay-outs; and stock market declines. He was encouraged by the $600 million inflow of new funds from investors during the period, despite the temporary decline in market performance. “We believe this demonstration of confidence is testament

Thu, 12 Nov 2020 05:20:24 +0000 NGC: Building a house of sustainability

NGC president Mark Loquan shares his optimism for the state energy giant amid concerns about the financial blow it took in the first half of this pandemic-hit year, in part one of an interview with associate editor CARLA BRIDGLAL. The National Gas Company (NGC) has long been a beacon of stability, the crown jewel of state enterprises, delivering a steady stream of dividends to the government, over its 45-year history. But for the first time ever, in its half-year financial report for 2020, the company announced a loss – $316.2 million, down 296 per cent, or $477.3 million, compared to the same period before. As overwhelming as that sounds, however, it needs to be put into context. NGC has endured extenuating circumstances over the last few months, not the least being the cumulative dampening effect of the covid19 pandemic on global demand for energy products, including natural gas. And even before that, the petrochemical industry, for which natural gas is a feedstock, has been going through one of its cyclical troughs with low demand, low prices and oversupply in the market. The company’s predicament, then, is not unique. (BP, for example, announced its 2020 half-year loss was US$21.2 billion, while Shell’s loss was US$18.15 billion.) Th

Sat, 07 Nov 2020 05:43:54 +0000 NEL records $327.5 m net loss

THE National Enterprises Limited (NEL) has reported a substantial $327.5 million net loss for the year ended March 31, in stark contrast to the net profit of $12.5 million recorded the previous fiscal year. It also reported paying $96 million in dividends for the year and retained $677.7 million in earnings as at March 31. The figures were discussed by the board and stakeholders during NEL's annual general meeting at Radisson Hotel, Port of Spain last Thursday. NEL, in its annual report, said that the major difference year-over-year is occasioned by net decline in the value subsidiaries (51 per cent-plus ownership) of $133.6 million or 20.1 per cent and decline in the value of joint ventures and associated companies of $200 million or 11.4 per cent. "The TSTT," management noted in the report, "was largely accountable for the decline in the subsidiaries category and NGC NGL Company Ltd in the joint ventures and associated companies group." At the same time, it added, decline in revenues in the energy sector particularly related to a decline in commodity prices and a cautious approach to cash flow management in the case of other investee companies, resulted in a decline in divided income by $74.6 million or 75.8 per cent.
