The Unit Trust Corporation (UTC) will stop buying and selling foreign currencies by August, as the service is "not aligned with (the company's) core business," executive director Nigel Edwards said on Thursday. UTC's nine bureaux de change, which are located at its investment centres throughout the country, will be closed by August 1. Edwards told viewers during the UTC's first virtual annual general meeting that since the organisation is not one of the registered licensed foreign exchange dealers under the Central Bank, it does not receive a mandatory allocation. All of its foreign exchange is earned either through trades at the bureaux or else bought from dealers. "The reality of the foreign exchange market for us is that there is very little supply and therefore little availability (for us)," he explained. The bureaux de change operations account for less than one per cent of the corporation's overall business, he added. The focus now will be on wealth creation for the corporation's 617,000 clients. The aim, Edwards said, will be to achieve the best results it can in 2020, despite the challenges in the local and international markets, brought on particularly by the covid19 pandemic. The AGM also marked the debut of new UTC chairman Gerry Brooks who said in his maiden speech th

Thu, 14 May 2020 07:21:15 +0000 Don’t be alarmed by market volatility

Sitting in his office on the tenth floor of the Unit Trust Corporation’s (UTC) head office on Independence Square, executive director Nigel Edwards recalled a conversation he had while working at an investment bank in London in the 1990s. “I was talking to one of the technical analysts,” he told Business Day. “These guys eat, sleep and breathe charts. It was during a liquidity crisis in the mid-1990s and I asked him if he was concerned about the returns he was seeing and if he’d recommend getting out of the market.” The man, Edwards remembered, responded by pulling up a chart of market data spanning decades. It was pretty much just a straight line – an upward trajectory. The man then pulled up a chart spanning 20 years, then another over five years. The result was fundamentally the same. The line denoting market performance kept going up. Sure, there were slight deviations and dips signifying temporary dips and stock market crashes, but overall, it just went up. “His point was if you remain invested in the market over a long period of time you’re going to get periods dips – 1987 when the international markets had one of their biggest crashes; 2008 and the Great Recession, and now the first quarter of 2020 (the great lockdown). But if you remain in the market over a (l

Thu, 14 May 2020 06:53:51 +0000 Regionally, credit unions look out for customers

The covid19 crisis has affected economies worldwide, leaving people without work in many cases due to stay-at-home measures, lockdowns and other measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Credit unions in the Caribbean have put several responses in place to cater to the needs of their members. During a webinar hosted by the Cipriani College of Labour and Co-operative Studies, heads of various credit union organisations outlined the operational responses that they and and their members had put in place. Many of them were the same, including finding ways for their workers to telecommute, determining how annual general meetings (AGMs) would take place, as this was when dividends were paid out, and lobbying governments to make sure that credit unions were seen as essential services. Caribbean Confederation of Credit Union general manager Denise Garfield said the 19-member affiliate organisation had begun looking at measures including co-operative social responsibility, communicating with various stakeholders and developing resources for their member organisations and members. They developed a pandemic checklist for the credit unions, protocols for fulfilling the checklist and developed a telecommuting policy. She said they had looked at protecting credit unio

Wed, 06 May 2020 18:26:58 +0000 Republic records $500m half-year profit

Republic Financial Holdings Ltd recorded a $543 million profit for the half-year ended March 31. While still significant, it is $240 million – or 30.6 per cent – lower than last year’s half-year profits. In a statement Wednesday, Republic said these results reflect preliminary estimates of the financial impact of the covid19 pandemic on the group as a result of increased operating expenses during the latter half of March 2020. Republic also set aside an additional $367.7 million for the first half of Fiscal 2020 to cover potential future losses (2019 – $134.7 million). Total assets stood at $98.4 billion at March 31, 2020, an increase of $15 billion or 17.9 per cent over the total assets at March 31, 2019, reflecting mainly the acquisition of Scotiabank’s operations in St Maarten and the Eastern Caribbean (except Antigua and Barbuda) on November 1, 2019. This added $12.7 billion to the group’s asset base. The acquisition of Scotiabank’s banking operations in the British Virgin Islands remains ongoing, with the group presently engaged with the regulator in that territory to obtain the requisite approval. Republic’s president, Nigel Baptiste, said via the release that the bank was “cognizant of its responsibility to help clients, staff, and communities navigate these uniq
